i just watched the lorax (2012) on a whim with anthony and it was the most mediocre, paint by numbers animated film i have ever seen and the fish were just fucking minions but anyway

having actually seen the film now, i think…i think i get the once-ler fandom? in retrospect there is absolutely nothing surprising about that particular character appealing to 2012 tumblr fandom bloggers so heavily. his fucking face, all of his little mannerisms, the fact that he’s “quirky” but not TOO quirky, slightly nerdy but not a dweeb, the “””dapper””” way he dresses, the way he’s nice enough but also ~tragic~ and ~misguided~ and ~insecure~, the fucking how bad me be musical number, the way they could make him out to be an edgy supervillain if they wanted, fucking everything. it’s like he was concocted through focus testing to perfectly appeal to superwholock bloggers circa 2012. no offense to fans of those bands but he looks like he listens exclusively to caravan palace and steam powered giraffe

and there are NO other characters in the film that would appeal to that crowd. he is the outlier. that is why the fandom was so fucked up, he was literally the only thing in the film to appeal to those fans. his look, his personality, all of that was made up just for the film. there is nothing else in the lorax source material or in the trite framing narrative about the kids trying to plant the tree that has the same appeal. so the fandom did the only thing they could do: they hyper-focused on one character

the only surprising thing is where he came from. it’s only ridiculous because of the source material and the fact that he’s from a film made by the creators of minions. he could’ve been in any film and people would’ve wanted to yiff him
